Pizza is one of the great symbols of Chicago‘s gastronomy. It is also in the sacred imaginary of Pope Leo XIV, specifically that of a place in his hometown that everything points to it being his favorite pizzeria. At least, that is what the owner and general manager of Aurelio’s says.

The hitherto Cardinal Robert Prevost, after a visit to his family, stopped at this place located in Homewood (Ilinois), a southern suburb of Chicago. The pizzeria would serve him a pepperoni pizza while he dined there, as Joe Aurelio revealed in an interview with 9News Australia (via TikTok).

The Pope opted for a pepperoni pizza made in the Chicago style. A significant act that has prompted the venue to honor him with the naming of “pope-erroni”. Aurelio’s in Homewood has also designated a special “pope’s table” where he ate during his visit, complete with a new chair from a local church.
