Bad Bunny‘s ode to Puerto Rico throughout his sixth studio album mixes ideas and demands such as the powers that threaten the island’s independence, gentrification and colonialism. A cocktail of ideas and social struggles among which is distilled a drink that he loves and defends, the coconut spout.
The “Pitorro de Coco” is a symbol of the island which Bad Bunny not only dedicates a song, but also promotes it in one of the episodes of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The artist would even bring a bottle to the host for him to try, with chunks of coconut still infused inside. After taking a sip, Jimmy Fallon exclaimed, ‘It’s delicious!’.
What is on the pitorro?
There are many homemade versions of pitorro in Puerto Rico, offering endless variations on the drink. Pitorro is aged with fruits that infuse the liqueur with their flavour enhanced with aguardiente infused with ingredients ranging from coconut to mango, prunes, pineapple, guava and more. In addition, the spout can be flavoured with spices, nuts or coffee, as preferred.

The great distinguishing feature of pitorro from other rums is its ageing in wooden casks for years and even decades, as well as its tendency to be stronger with a higher alcohol content. This is not only associated not only with its homemade versions, but also with commercial ones such as the 50% ABV Puerto Rico Distillery.
