Although french fries are the star side dish in any self-respecting fast food chain, other options such as onion rings are not far behind. But why has McDonald’s, for example, never opted to give onion rings a permanent place on its menu? A former chef of the chain has explained in TikTok the reason why McDonald’s does not include onion rings in its regular menu.

It is true that in the past, the hamburger restaurant has launched for a limited time the option of ordering this product as a complement. It did so in 2021 in Australia and has also been available in other countries such as Costa Rica or even in Spain. But McDonald’s has never bet heavily on this, especially in the United States, something that, for example, Burger King has always done. The reason for this refusal has been explained in TikTok by a former worker of the chain.

French fries are more profitable

“McDonald’s is more profitable when it’s more efficient,” said Mike Haracz, former manager of culinary innovation at the chain’s headquarters. “If McDonald’s could sell just one thing, that would be great for them, so they’ve actually narrowed the choice and narrowed the options, more specifically in the U.S.”

Another reason for not launching onion rings in the U.S. is that fewer people would order the fries, which is one of the most profitable products for the chain. “With onion rings they would be selling a much less profitable product, they would probably have to charge you an extra dollar or even more because they are not as efficient at making onion rings as they are with french fries,” concludes the former McDonald’s chef.
