We already know that when it comes to auctions, any object can be valued in the millions. But sometimes there are also unusual bids like the one that took place a few weeks ago at the Brettells auction house in the UK. Through its Facebook page, the company shared the image of the auction of a lemon dating back to no less than 1739.

In other words, it was a lemon that was almost 285 years old. As expected, and judging by the images, the condition of the citrus fruit was not suitable for eating. It was dark brown in color, although it was practically still in its normal shape.

In addition to the object itself, what was also striking was the price that the bidding reached. Finally the buyer decided to raise the amount to more than 1600 euros. Although the auction house has not specified the provenance or the ‘specialness’ of the lemon, in the image you can read the engraved phrase that reads: “Delivered by Mr. P Lu Franchini on November 4, 1739 to Miss E Baxter”.

That money figure surprised even the auction team, who initially – almost as a bit of fun – pitched the lemon and estimated a price between 45 and 70 euros. If life gives you lemons that are almost 300 years old, what are you supposed to do?
