Maktub’ is a word that has always been very present in the life of Paco Arango, filmmaker and founder of the Aladina Foundation. In fact, it gave the title to his first film in 2011, the proceeds of which he used to build the bone marrow transplant center at the Niño Jesús Hospital in Madrid, which also bears the name Maktub.

Now, Arango has continued with the magical wake of this term to create the first solidarity wine under the same name. Maktub is a Rioja Reserva wine made from Tempranillo and Graciano grapes and aged for 26 months in American oak barrels, with the help of a team of wine experts from the Herederos del Marqués de Riscal family.

This is the first wine whose total proceeds go to support charitable purposes; a wine with a philosophy of humanity based on sharing and enjoying life with our loved ones. Maktub means “it was written”. And with this wine, Arango wants to promote the philosophy of loving life and enjoying it with our loved ones without wasting a single minute. For the launch, 5,000 units have been put on sale, available in a Premium Case of 2 bottles of 75 cl for 50 € or with the Maktub Box of 6 bottles of 75 cl for 141 €. It can be purchased through its online store.

Tasting note

  • Maktub Reserva 2017. D.O. Ca. Rioja
  • Varieties (Tempranillo and Graciano; Alcoholic strength 14% Vol.; Aged 26 months in American oak; Contains sulfites)
  • Serving temperature: Between 16 and 18 ºC.
  • Tasting notes: Very intense cherry color. A somewhat closed wine at the beginning, with a marked Bordeaux style, with smoky and spicy notes such as pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon. We also find notes of very ripe black fruits with hints of blueberries, cassis and black currant. Balsamic hints of good intensity. Smooth and creamy on the palate, with ripe and velvety tannins. Meaty and with great intensity, complex and elegant. Long and with a finish that reminds us of the fruit found on the nose. To drink now or to keep for its great potential for good evolution in the bottle.
  • Food pairing: An ideal wine to enjoy with stews, roasts, grilled meats, legumes and oily fish.
