One of these is the cultivation of mushrooms in space through an experiment called \u201c<strong>Mission MushVroom<\/strong>\u201d in which scientists are testing whether<strong> mushrooms <\/strong>can grow fruit in microgravity. If the experiment works, it could open up a new dimension in astronaut nutrition and the way food is grown on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by Dr <strong>Fl\u00e1via Fayet-Moore<\/strong>, space nutritionist and CEO of FOODiQ Global, the mission began with blocks of colonised substrate and tubes of mycelium to observe how oyster mushrooms colonise and how they can fruit in space. \u2018Edible mushrooms like the oyster mushroom offer unique agricultural applications and nutritional benefits, making them the perfect space crop,\u2019 says Fayet-Moore. &#8220;They grow quickly in small spaces, require minimal resources such as water, and need no sunlight to grow. They are also fully edible and help bring vegetable farming full circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Mission MushVroom\u2019s \u2018magical\u2019 payload paves the way for growing food in orbit\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RNCmAIXqBoI?start=59&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike other crops on earth, mushrooms fit the \u2018grow, pick and eat\u2019 model, ideal for space missions without kitchen facilities. They are also a source of nutritional energy, providing 100% of an astronaut&#8217;s daily vitamin D requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In parallel, the scientific team is also investigating possible physical, biochemical or genetic differences compared to mushrooms grown on Earth. \u2018If we are able to grow mushrooms and other crops in these confined, controlled environments, urban agriculture could be advanced here on Earth,\u2019 says Fayet-Moore. \u2018Faced with the challenge of feeding 10 billion people by 2050, this kind of research could be a game-changer.\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click here to read the Spanish version.
