The idea of being able to eat in the metaverse is getting closer and closer, thanks to initiatives such as those launched by El Celler de Can Roca together with the Mobile World Capital Foundation (MWCapital) at the MWC in Barcelona. It is a tasting of ‘phygital’ chocolates, which “tries to transmit technology to people through experiences”, according to the CEO of MWCapital during the launch.

Jordi Roca, head of sweets at El Celler de Can Roca, together with Damian Allsop, the master chocolatier and head of Casa Cacao, have created three chocolates with different tastes – spicy, sour and sweet – and through a 360-degree tasting, virtual and physical reality come together to “reach the maximum expression of taste”, as Jordi Roca has commented. These chocolates are tasted through the immersive technology of the Spanish company Future Space, in charge of designing the virtual reality part of the project.

A sensory journey

Roca himself also explained that, through this immersive tasting, you can experience the sensations emanating from each flavour. He also took the opportunity to present at MWC his new IcePhone from Rocambolesc -which he launched years ago-, a yoghurt, lime and liquorice ice cream that was given at the inauguration lunch and was delivered in a box similar to that of these boxes.

For Damian Allsop, another of the project’s architects, this tasting will also be an “educational experience” on how to conceive flavours. Meanwhile, Future Space predicted that this type of action will be much more common in a few years’ time. This sensory route is a real journey for those who try it because it offers the possibility of interacting with flavours also through smell.
