Although it sounds obvious, there is nothing better than water when you are thirsty and, according to the OCU, the best option is tap water, for its good quality and for being cheaper. But of course, there are many areas of our country where water is not in the best conditions. For that reason, the Organization of Consumers and Users has elaborated a ranking with the best and worst tap water in Spain. And, despite the fact that the water of Madrid is reputed to be the best in… Spoiler: there are other Spanish cities ahead of the capital.

One of the aspects highlighted by the OCU is that, in general, tap water is of good quality in practically all the Spanish municipalities it has analyzed. And the key to defining this quality is the hardness of the water, according to its content of lime, magnesium, chlorine or contaminants. This tends to be most noticeable in the taste.

What are the best tap waters?

Compiling the data published by the OCU, cities such as Burgos, Vigo, San Sebastian and Las Palmas top the list of the best tap water. They are closely followed by the water of Madrid, Granada and León, among others.

With respect to those of poorer quality, where the water is hard, it usually stands out for having a bad taste. And this occurs in areas such as Zaragoza, Ciudad Real, Palma de Mallorca, Huelva, Logroño or Barcelona. Although the water is drinkable, it needs to improve its composition, either because of its hardness or because it contains trihalomethanes or bacteria that are harmful to our health. The usual and advisable thing to do in these cities is to drink natural mineral waters of weak or very weak mineralization.

And you, are you more of a tap or bottled water drinker?
