Mercadona exceeds 100,000 workers after creating 5,000 new jobs in 2023

Mercadona is the undisputed leader in the supermarket sector, and this also translates into job creation, where in 2023 it consolidated its position as the largest employer in Spain. For the first time, the company has exceeded 100,000 workers (98,700 of which are in Spain and 5,300 in Portugal). In this way, Juan Roig’s company beats its own record, having created 5,000 jobs during the past year, placing it at 104,000 employees on the payroll.

In addition, the company has detailed that “all of them have permanent and quality contracts”. In fact, Mercadona raised the minimum wage to 1,553 euros gross per month, which is 17% more than the Interprofessional Minimum Wage.

It has been developing this workforce model since 2016, when it launched a transformation with which to “consolidate a more digital, productive and sustainable company model,” they emphasize in a statement. This has translated into more than 25,000 jobs since then. 82% of the total workforce is located in stores. While the bulk of the workforce is located in an age range between 40-49 years (39%) and 30-39 years (29%).

Mercadona’s Director of Social Responsibility, Paula Llop, pointed out that the commitment of these 100,000 people has allowed the company “to achieve the challenges set despite the context of uncertainty that we have experienced in recent years”.
