It may sound surreal but, in a way, it is one of the latest viral trends in South Korea. The strange practice of eating fried toothpicks, seasoning them with cheese and other spices and eating them as if they were potatoes has gone viral. Something that several netizens define as a snack that tastes “like rice cake”.

Evidently, the Korean health authorities have been quick to advise against this practice, as they are not products to be eaten and “their safety has not been verified”.

In any case, the toothpicks used in South Korea are a bit different from the ones we have in Spain, which are usually made of wood or plastic. There, the toothpicks are made of corn or potato starch mixed with sorbitol, a kind of sugar alcohol found in fruits. They are also biodegradable and water-soluble.
