The charcoal latte, also known as ‘black latte‘, has been making waves on the internet for a few years now because of the mystery surrounding it and its unusual preparation with activated charcoal. This dark black drink also has numerous detoxifying health benefits, and, it can help hangovers and gastrointestinal problems, it promises.
The ‘charcoal’ drink is deeply rooted in the culture of Indonesia, a country that has a long tradition with coffee and the use of charcoal in its preparation. In Indonesia, charcoal coffee is known as “Kopi Joss”, and is a unique variety of coffee that originates in Yogyakarta. The Kopi Joss brewing process consists of adding red-hot charcoal to a cup of freshly brewed black coffee.

There are several theories or legends about the origins of the charcoal latte, although the most popular one is that it was discovered accidentally by a street vendor named Mr. Man who accidentally dropped a piece of charcoal in his coffee cup. Instead of throwing it away, he decided to try the combination, which he surprisingly found very pleasant.
From Indonesia, this type of cleansing coffee has spread around the world, even as a trend from brunches to viral videos in the form of liquid fashion.
